What is Peer Mediation?

Why Peer Mediation?

Peer Mediation:

PEER MEDIATION:

Peer Mediation is the process of resolving conflicts with the assistance of a neutral third party, trained student mediators. The mediators help the parties in dispute find a way to resolve their problems.

What conflicts should be mediated?

Mediation can be appropriate in almost any case where the parties are willing to participate in a peace-making process; "listen" to each other's thoughts and feelings; let go of blame; and look to the future by negotiating solutions that work for everyone.

We can help with conflicts concerning:

  • Rumors

  • Bullying/name-calling

  • Peer relationships

  • Peer pressure

  • Disagreements/arguments

  • Money/property

  • Conflicts may be resolved before they escalate and lead to more serious problems.

  • Communication between the parties can be improved and relationships strengthened.

  • The parties come up with solutions that meet their particular needs.

  • Sessions are held on campus.

  • It's informal.

  • It saves time (Most cases are resolved in one session)

  • It's free!!

Who is a Peer Mediator?

A peer mediator is a student who has successfully completed a conflict resolution training program and has developed effective communication and problem-solving skills.

Mediators believe in the peacemaking process and have the desire to help their fellow peers. They don't advise, counsel, or tell you what to do. They are neutral, non-judgemental, and good listeners. Mediators just want to help you.
